BANDS:
BLACK MATH HORSEMAN: http://www.myspace.com/blackmathhorseman
Call it ambient post-doom or perhaps alchemic psych-rock, only without all those annoying freeform guitar freakouts. Call it ‘pure spirits by ritual dismemberment.’ Either way, Black Math Horseman is Sera Timms (bass/vocals), Ian Barry (guitar) Bryan Tulao (guitar) and Sasha Popovic (drums). They are from Los Angeles. Their debut album, Wyllt (out April 21st on Tee Pee Records), was recorded and produced by desert guru Scott Reeder (Kyuss, Unida). The rest is a discovery about to be made.
FACT: http://www.myspace.com/factjapan
What gives Japan’s FACT such an impressive arsenal of sonic tools with which to create their trademark sound is the band’s obvious love of music with an edge, whether it be old-school thrash metal, contemporary punk, or hardcore, as well as their penchant for crafting powerful hooks that inject a crucial pop element into the mix. Their first full-length release, a self-titled collection of 15 tracks recorded in May 2008, produced by Michael Elvis Baskette (Incubus, Story Of the Year, Chevelle) and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, My Chemical Romance). Unique aspects of FACT are their use of English for their lyrical content and their overall visual presentation; the band wears traditional Japanese masks, not only hiding their personal identities, but hopefully, some of their external musical signifiers.
GREELEY ESTATES: http://www.myspace.com/greeleyestates
In short order Greeley Estates has earned a cult following that stretches from Arizona’s Valley of the Sun to the listening parties at Austin’s South by Southwest conference, and released a slickly produced and packaged album, OUTSIDE OF THIS, to wide acclaim. Greeley Estates is a descendant of first-wave screamo outfits like Clikitat Ikatowi and Heroin, with the melodicism of emo-poppers like Braid and early Get Up Kids, and the band holds it’s own against contemporaries like Poison the Well, the Bled, and Thursday. Perhaps Greeley’s most distinctive contribution to the post-hardcore pantheon is its infectious positivity – even the most wrenching tales of lost love are, in the end, optimistic. Greeley Estates’ strength at songwriting – primarily the boys’ flair for dynamics and emotive musicianship – is the reason that audiences at their shows crowd toward the stage to sing and scream right along with the band.
MEMPHIS MAY FIRE: http://www.myspace.com/memphismayfire
Saddle up and don’t mess with Texas! Dallas rockers, Memphis May Fire have enough BBQ, guts, and Van Halen riffs to burn up the grill. Out to redefine southern rock—these guys have the cool factor of ZZ Top and Underoath combined. Their deal with legendary northeast label Trustkill Records bore their first full length record. Move over Motley Crue, welcome Memphis May Fire and although the average age in the band measures up to the state liquor laws, these guys have plenty of time to spread their fire, it’s only a matter of months before I can say “I told you so” looking forward to it…
NIGHT HORSE: http://www.myspace.com/nighthorsemusic
Tradition lies deep in the music of Los Angeles rock and roll group NIGHT HORSE, which features members of dirge soundscapists Ancestors and the vocal styling of Sam James Velde, formerly of explorative and adventurous rockers Bluebird. NIGHT HORSE bring a saddle bag full of heavy, raw and riffed-out blues-tinged rock steeped in the likes of John Lee Hooker, Taste, Peter Green¹s Fleetwood Mac and The Allman Brothers Band without a retro stitch. NIGHT HORSE rein in the past with a firm heel in the present, galloping next to such like-minded contemporaries as Harvey Milk, Down and Priestess. NIGHT HORSE’s debut album ‘The Dark Won’t Hide You’ is comprised of 6 sonic hymns, engineered and mixed by Mathias Schneeberger (Sunn 0))), Obsessed, Gutter Twins). The Dark Won’t Hide You is out now on Tee Pee Records in the US & UK.
SKELETONWITCH: http://www.myspace.com/skeletonwitch
Formed in Athens, Ohio, SKELETONWITCH has been launching metal assaults on an unsuspecting underground since 2003. The members of THE WITCH are bonded by the universal truth, that heavy metal is the law, thereby unleashing the band’s brand of ripping, epic thrash. SKELETONWITCH brings together the old and sacred elements of true heavy metal, melts them down, and forges them into a brand new monolith of riffage. THE WITCH’s live show is not to be missed – the vicious spectacle: a whirlwind of nipple-length hair, dual flying Vs, roaring Marshall stacks and a black master of ceremonies as sick as Satan himself. WORSHIP THE WITCH!
